Concert: The Unknown Goddess – Ensemble 642 & Karen Fitz-Gibbon

PLEASE NOTE, DUE TO ILLNESS THIS CONCERT HAS BEEN CANCELLED.

Ensemble 642
Hannah Lane, Italian triple harp
Nicholas Pollock, theorbo
Guest artist: Karen Fitz-Gibbon, soprano

Sexy, smitten, bitter, cheeky, beautiful and passionate, the love songs of 17th-century Italian composer Barbara Strozzi speak to us across the centuries.

Join Ensemble 642 and soprano Karen Fitz-Gibbon as they explore the pleasures and pains of love through one of Italy’s lesser-known but most intriguing and prolific composers alongside love songs from her more famous predecessors, Giulio Caccini and Claudio Monteverdi, which place Strozzi within the great tradition of 17th-century Italian vocal music.

With the luxurious sounds of two of the most prized instruments of the time — the Italian triple harp and the theorbo — this fascinating program contrasts Strozzi’s rarely-heard, virtuosic and innovative cantatas with popular dances and intimate instrumental toccatas of the Italian baroque.

Bryan Dawe “A Tangier Affair”

The multitalented Bryan Dawe talks about his travels and love affair with Morocco and his exhibition of photographs of Tangier.

Fascinated by the rich history of Tangier in Morocco, and increasingly drawn to the city’s cosmopolitan beauty, satirist, artist and writer, Bryan Dawe created an extraordinary series of collage artworks which he exhibited in the Kasbah of Tangier in February 2017.

He sought to remind us of the many creative people who found inspiration in the places they frequented. Glowing with sensuality and energy, the works recall William S Burroughs, Jane and Paul Bowles, the old cafes they inhabited alongside artists, spies, the wealthy, and the smugglers. All set against the backdrop of a city of surreal contrasts, Bryan honours Tangier’s creative and social past in a talk about his exhibition and the creative and social world of one of the world’s most intriguing cities.
