Concert: The Unknown Goddess – Ensemble 642 & Karen Fitz-Gibbon

PLEASE NOTE, DUE TO ILLNESS THIS CONCERT HAS BEEN CANCELLED.

Ensemble 642
Hannah Lane, Italian triple harp
Nicholas Pollock, theorbo
Guest artist: Karen Fitz-Gibbon, soprano

Sexy, smitten, bitter, cheeky, beautiful and passionate, the love songs of 17th-century Italian composer Barbara Strozzi speak to us across the centuries.

Join Ensemble 642 and soprano Karen Fitz-Gibbon as they explore the pleasures and pains of love through one of Italy’s lesser-known but most intriguing and prolific composers alongside love songs from her more famous predecessors, Giulio Caccini and Claudio Monteverdi, which place Strozzi within the great tradition of 17th-century Italian vocal music.

With the luxurious sounds of two of the most prized instruments of the time — the Italian triple harp and the theorbo — this fascinating program contrasts Strozzi’s rarely-heard, virtuosic and innovative cantatas with popular dances and intimate instrumental toccatas of the Italian baroque.

Dvorak Piano Trio in E minor Op.90 Dumky Trio
Suk Elegie for Piano Trio Op.23

The trio was the first Australian ensemble to be selected for the prestigious European Chamber Music Academy, where it was ensemble-in-residence from 2010 to 2013.

Concert: Son of a Bach – Robert Macfarlane & Jacqueline Ogeil

Robert Macfarlane, tenor

Jacqueline Ogeil, Cristofori piano

The Bach family’s rich musical heritage began generations before Johann Sebastian took his place among Western music’s most revered composers.

The son of a distinguished court musician, Bach himself fathered 20 children, four of whom are now considered significant composers in their own right.

This program will explore the songs and keyboard music of W.F, C.P.E, J.C.F and J.C Bach – musical luminaries of one of history’s great musical minds.

Robert Macfarlane is an internationally recognised interpreter of Bach, particularly the Evangelist roles in The St. Matthew and St. John Passions. He is praised for his ‘blissful, clarion top’ and ‘remarkable capacity for mastering works that would daunt most singers’. He has performed as a soloist with, among others, the Melbourne and Adelaide Symphony Orchestras, the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, the Auckland Philharmonia and the Gewandhaus Orchestra (Leipzig), is an active performer on the Opera stage, and was a pupil of the great German tenor Peter Schreier.
