History, landscape and the novel: writing The Memory Artist

Katherine Brabon’s debut novel The Memory Artist won the 2016 The Australian/Vogel’s Literary Award.

Hear Katherine talk about how her ideas for the novel began as a student of Russian history at Oxford. She will describe her travels to Moscow and St Petersburg, as well as sources of inspiration in literature, trauma studies and cultural memory theory. The talk will conclude with questions from the audience.

Saray Iluminado in concert

Saray Iluminado play new interpretations of Sevdah from Bosnia and Herzegovina and Jewish Sephardic music from the Balkans.

Singer Dr Nela Trifkovic (WAAPA and VCA) grew up in Bosnia singing with her father’s band. She is joined by Australia’s leading traditional klezmer violinist Ernie Gruner (violin, mandolin), Kelly Dowall (clarinet, ney) who has studied in Turkey and Greece, and William Thompson (oud, lute) who has performed with Astra Chamber Music Ensemble and Troveresse medieval ensemble.

Respected local gardeners will lead you on a guided tour of the spectacular Duniera heritage garden c. 1872. These one-hour tours are highly entertaining as well as informative; a treat with leading local experts in the field.

Tours start at the front of the house. Bring sensible walking shoes and an umbrella (and check the weather report). Parking available behind homestead.

Total Fire Ban or Dangerous Weather

In the event of a Total Fire Ban day or dangerous weather warning, Duneira will be closed to the public and money for bookings of events refunded or the event moved to another day. It is the patron’s responsibility to check weather reports leading up to the event and make alternative arrangements.
